last weekend, sunday, 19/03/06, i did sumting i was proud of. it was mentally and physically exhausting, but trust me, it was well worth it. i went along with the red cresent society of Kolej Keris Mas (another residential college aside frm mine, kolej dato onn) to visit an orphanage in semenyih. it was such a joyful and wholesome experience that i would gladly share with others. well, here goes…
a joyful and excited bunch of 32 over members of the red cresent society boared a comfy ukm rented bus and headed to our destination on that cool sunday morning. mostly everyone on board were so xcited, they cud hardly remain calm and seated. haha! esp my good MENTION frens, ieki and may chin. they were the ones responsible for my participation in the visit. after a good 20 mins on board, we finally arrived to where we were headed.
the place was simple, but warm and comforable to be called a "home". it was kinda like a renovated shop house lot to function as nursery for younger and newer orphane. upon arrival, we were greeted by the director of the home, Pastor Jacob. he a jolly fellow. he gave us a sound introduction bout the home and the orphanes it houses. their age ranges from 2 to 22 years old. some have even grown up and left to live independant lives. of all of the kids who live there, some are victims of unfortunate incidents such as rape, sexual harrassment, and even abuse. and of the total 130 over kids, 6 are of orang asli ethincity. a handful of them are without birth certificates, and because of this, they are unable to attend school like other childern, even if they have reach the prime age of 13 yo. however, they are thaught by volunteer home tutors who visit them at least 3 times a week.
nevertheless, there are also kids who are orphanes whn they were left with no one to care for after the demise of their parents. these children attend a national sch, nearby here. with 60% of them are boys, it is suprising to learn that majority of the childern suffer frm inferiority complex, which means to say, they have low self confidence and tend to be introverts. with thier condition of lack of being loved, the pastor warned us (the members who were mostly females) tht the boys here are cunning and brilliant to capture our hearts.. ) haha.. we all laughed in delight..
so. tht was the "brief" intro by the pastor. i tink my version isnt as moving and touching as the original, but believe me, if u were there, as i was, and a few more lines wud hav made me tear on the spot. reli. i was reli touched whn i heard of the kids condition. so i decided to gov them a wonderful time so they cud forget all thier worries ans sorrows. for tht moments at least…
in a few moments after the briefing, there was a long double file of kids lining up outside the door, waiting anxiously to come in. our members stood in a circular pattern and shook the kids hands while they came it. it was reli cute. anyhow, the kids were put into 5 diff group,s after which v began an ice-breaking game. angel and devil. too long to xplain, contact me for more infor. hu hu hu.. wel, back to the story, at first, they were kinda shy, but slowly warmed up to their visitors. it didnt take long though, for a 3 yo toddler to starts climbing on one of the guy member, as if he was a tree ( hes tall and thin, and wit a playful personality. go figure. hehe. names TAN ) afta alot of jumping and laughing, we breaked for lunch. and ya, all the foodstuf were fully sponsored by charitable sources. lunch. tea. drink. u name it. even the goodies for the kids were sponsored. btw, the members didnt get anything. haha. (oh, besides a tiring, but wonderful experience tht is)
after lunch, it was my turn to light up the mood. i started off wit a few songs, and then a few games. all had fun, but ihad to admit, it was rather messy. sorry, they’re only kids.. wat’d u expect? haha.. at 3 pm, those below 12 yo were whicked off in a van, away to their home for an afternoon nap. haha. so nice. the seniors conducted a first aid session wit the older kids. at first it was kinda boring and dull, but whn the session started asking for volunteers to demonstrate first aid techniques, evryone was suddenly alive an kicking! AHAH! whn the session ended, the kids had tea while a few of the members, myself included, proceeded to a nearby field to set-up the telematch session. whn the older boys heard it was outdoor time, ina hurry, the ran towards the field! the games included 3 binded feet, pass the water balloon, and blow the flour. after gettinf all hyped up (and not to mention, wet and drity) we all had to adjourn inside to escape the oncoming rain.
inside, a simple closing ceremony was held and pastor jacob as well as our event head, brian gav a short appreciation speech. then it was souvenirs time. i was pleasently suprised by the members whn they called out my name as a guest coordinator for the event. i was reli touched and delighted. thnx ieki and the gang! reli appreciate it.. but it was soon pouring like cats and elephants.. and we cudnt board the bus, even whn it’s nicely parked outside of the home. instead, i whipped up a few more games tht were up my sleeves, juz to keep the kids (and the members too) well entertained.. this game got the kids goin crazee as they were havin so much fun, falling down and tripping over each other didnt reli matter anymore. bt i was dead worried about their safety. haha.
eventually the pourng rain became a lighht drizzle, and we hopped onto the bus. the elder boys were kind enough to shelter us wit umbrellas to the bus. so sweet of them. we waved frm inside the bus through misted windows as the bus slowly drove away. wat a wonderful end to a spectacular event// (sound familliar? haha.. its kinda like wat paul moss sed durin msian idol finale, season 1) but reli, it was how it felt, for me at least. bcuz whole day, i was singging, and laughing, and occasionally shouting frm the bottom of my lungs to manage the lillte forces of nature. haha!
i was probly supposed to be the most exhausted one of all, but suprisingly, i wasnt. it felt good being able to bring a smile to the kids faces by sharing joy and laughter with them. truly a mmorable and meaningful experience. hope to get a similliar event goin for my kolej soon. thts all for now, but b4 i go, heres wat i larnt throughout the trip:
LESSON :
life is a wonderful experience. the reason it is wonderful is because it is wholesome, it has - good and bad - the full package. and it is realy unfortunate for these wonderful kids had to experince the bad side of it so early in life. however, i believe there owis a reason for something, eveything. even in thier current situation, i strongly belive tht each and every kid there have something special in them tht makes them unique. and it is also on the part of fortunate ppl like us - YOU and ME - to share selflessly wit these unfortunate kids, our joy and laughter, and most inportantly our hearts filled with LOVE..
so? what are you waiting for? go get a meaningful experience today! at a society near you!no hidden costs, no extra chagres, and it’s contented feeling back gurantee! you’ve got nothing to lose..
so what are you still waiting for? pick up your butt and share joy, love, and laughter with the less fortunate now..
